"Science Communication Strategies and Testimony Tips”

D4DPR Board Member Dr. Julio Nunes hosted this webinar with physician-advocate experts Dr. Katherine "Kiki" Kennedy and Dr. Falisha Gilman. ​Drs. Kennedy and Gilman are clinical professors in psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine and co-lead the Advocacy Track for the Health Equity Curriculum. Their presentation was jam-packed with advice on presenting scientific information to a lay audience and preparing to provide testimony. During this webinar for healthcare professionals and scientists, our presenters covered:

  • How to craft advocacy-focused communications
  • How to tailor advocacy communications to engage different audiences
  • How to recognize best practices for providing legislative testimony

About our Speakers:

Katherine G. Kennedy, MD, is a practicing psychiatrist and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in the Yale School of Medicine, where she directs the Yale Legislative Advocacy Program, co-leads the Advocacy Track for the Health Equity Curriculum, serves as Faculty Co-Leader of the Psychotherapy Distinction Track, and supervises psychiatry residents in psychotherapy. Dr. Kennedy is the Chair of the Legislative Committee for the Connecticut Psychiatric Society and Section Co-Editor of “Voices in Advocacy and Policy” for APA’s Psychiatric News.

Falisha Gilman, MD, is a psychiatrist, educator, and mental health advocate based in New Jersey. She serves as a Clinical Instructor at Yale Department of Psychiatry, where she co-leads the Advocacy Track of the Health Equity Curriculum. Dr. Gilman is Co-Chair of the Council on Advocacy for the New Jersey Psychiatric Association and an active leader in state and national advocacy efforts. Her work focuses on expanding access to mental health care and helping physicians develop effective advocacy skills to drive systems-level change.
